LIVING IN CUERNAVACA

CUERNAVACA/CUAUHNAHUAC

Cuernavaca or Cuauhnahuac means "place of water and trees". It is located in a beautiful valley south of Mexico City surrounded by trees. Cuernavaca is the capital and largest city of the State of Morelos . It has been one of the principal vacation centers of central Mexico since Pre-Cortesian times due to its temperature, year-round climate, prevailing sunshine, and abundance of flowering trees and shrubs. From June to October there are rain showers in the afternoon or evening. The rest of the year is usually clear and dry. Informal dress for warm weather is always appropriate, although it is wise to come prepared for a cool evening excursion to the mountains or a visit to Mexico City (only 1 hour from Cuernavaca in a pleasant bus ride) where the climate is cooler.

OTHER EXCURSIONS AND CULTURAL EVENTS

In an extra effort to involve each participant in a very personalized way in the everyday essence of Mexican life, the program sponsors cultural and social events, such as visits to coffee houses of "peñas culturales" with local and national artists. Participation of the students is encouraged in events featuring dance, songs, poetry, etc.

LIVING ARRANGEMENTS

Integral to the program is an atmosphere of participation in the life and cultural activities of Cuernavaca , a "family" environment that allows for ample and spontaneous practice of Spanish.Participants live with Mexican families. Housing costs cover both lodging and three meals per day. Living with a family provides students with the special opportunity of being exposed to daily Mexican life, language, customs, social attitudes, economic differences, eating habits and modes of entertainment.

The application form includes some personal questions, to facilitate your placement with a Mexican family. Every effort is made to accommodate two participants in one family. Participants are given the opportunity to room with a particular person, upon request.Living in an unfamiliar setting may cause some discomfort at first. However, the resulting cultural awareness and increased language facility is well worth it.
